- Designed to help students plan for their futures and prepare them for independent living with a focus on communication, well-being, relationships, sex education, career planning, and independent living skills. *Must be completed by date of graduation.

English Language Arts (ELA) 9 |

- ELA 9 emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing thoughts (six streams of language), feelings and experiences in order to help students develop their abilities to manage ideas and information, comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print, and other media text, and enhance the clarity and artistry of communication.

- As part of the Alberta, and Western Canadian Protocol, Math 9 focuses on continued development of mathematical appreciation and literacy, problem solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communications. Students learn to use the basic functions of scientific calculators and other mathematical procedures forming a solid foundation for Math 10C.

Physical Education (P.E.) and Health 9 |

- P.E. and Health 9 combines both the provincial Physical Education and Health courses. Students develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Students are introduced to a variety of activities, including dance, games, types of movement and individual activities both in the school environment and in off-campus settings that will help them to develop physical skills.

- Religion 9 helps students to understand and appreciate the Christian faith and how it impacts their lives and the contemporary issue that they face, using the Bible.

- Science 9 is divided into five units: Biological Diversity, Matter and Chemical Change, Environmental Chemistry, Electrical Principals and Technology, and Space Exploration. Each unit has a joint focus on both concept and skill development.

- Service Learning requires that each students completes twenty-five hours of documented service learning activities in the community, church or school by end of the school year. * Each student is eligible to earn 1 credit over their 3 years of Service Learning by registering in CMH2030 – "Community Volunteerism".

- Social Studies 9 focuses on citizenship, identity and quality of life and how they are impacted by political and legislative processes in Canada. The role of economic systems in Canada and the United States is also examined.

- Art 9 introduces students to the basic elements and principles of design and expression.

- Students may have the opportunity to earn one or more credits in a variety of CTS modules that relate to the school’s academic & co-curricular program. These modules may focus on developing technology-related skills, support learning in other subject areas, and/or prepare students for the workplace.

- Choral Music 9 introduces students to basic vocal, aural, interpretive and theoretical skills.

- Digital Photography introduces a series of lessons and activities using digital cameras and computer software programs. This class covers features of a digital camera, the digital darkroom, printing and creating, subjects and styles and macro/micro shots.

- Drama 9 introduces basic concepts, skills and attributes in drama. Students are introduced to concepts of movement, speech, improvising and acting.

English as a Second Language (E.S.L.) |

- E.S.L. assists students in improving basic English language skills, focusing on reading, writing and verbal communication. Through systematic instruction, students gain a stronger fluency of the English language.

- French 9 assists students in developing a foundational level of language learning that will set the stage for developing comprehension and production. The course also helps students to develop personal language learning strategies for building vocabulary and developing structures.

- Information Processing 9 is an introduction to computer applications, particularly word processing, databases and spreadsheets, presentation software and web page design. Students will explore applications in a level appropriate to their background.

Off-Campus Education and Registered Apprenticeship Program (R.A.P.) |

- Students who hold part time jobs outside of school may be eligible for additional credits through the Work Experience or R.A.P. Contact the Principal for details.

- The R.A.P. gives students on-site training by a skilled tradesperson with classroom learning. Students get practical, hands-on training, and get a start on their apprenticeship for potential careers in the trades.

- Spanish 9 is a basic introduction to communication and literacy, and appreciation of Hispanic cultures. Skills taught include basic vocabulary, syntax and grammar, and incorporates some computer-based learning.

- Students can acquire knowledge in areas of fitness and nutrition, injury management, management for sports teams and other topics.

- The Work Experience Program provides students an opportunity to acquire credits for part-time/full-time jobs. Students explore careers and reflect upon specific knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in the workplace.
